Data collection during the dissolution of the UK Government in 2024 – 30 May to 3 July.
Project launch online 30 October 2024.
The UK General Election 2024 was an opportunity for voters to decide who they wanted to govern for the next five years. The communication during the campaign was largely one-directional – the parties presenting their ideas to the people. During the dissolution of the UK Government, from 30 May to 3 July, Abrahams Giuliano collected numerous individual messages for the new government in the form of answers to four simple questions:
- where were you born?
- where do you live?
- will you be voting on 4 July?
- what’s your message to the new government?
Once the new government was formed we initially sent the responses, one a day, to Sir Keir Starmer as he was Francesca Giuliano’s constituency MP at the time. We received the following reply:
“Hello Francesca
Thank you for the emails you have sent to Keir regarding the above project.
Keir’s constituency office is a small one (a total of 4 staff) and we receive many, many requests for direct help and assistance each and every day. We are not a large government department with the resources to answer questions of this type sent in a piecemeal way.
Please could you consider sending them to us in one batch and we will see what we can do to answer?
However, we will have to prioritise local casework involving pressing local cases.
With kind regards.”
Having sent them all and heard no more from Sir Keir or his office we posted the responses daily on our Instagram account.
The film above contrasts what people have told us they want, with Sir Keir’s first speech as Prime Minister on the steps of Downing Street on 5 July 2024, explaining what his government intends to do.
